“Oscars 2022 Never Forget Two Names: Will and Chris (A Video Analysis of Emotions through the story)

imentiv January 3, 2023

After the incident that took place between Chris and Will at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, you might feel advised to think twice before cracking a joke. While Jada responded with an unhappy emotion, Will did not tolerate it at all, which was a reaction that could be seen right away. The excitement, hope, curiosity, and serenity of the Award night suddenly vanished with this incident, with social media interpreting it in many ways. Using our imentiv AI technology, let’s analyze the video of the incident.

This technology detects the facial emotion of characters in the video and tells you what emotion they’re in. So the character’s face displays a bounding box with emotion. Furthermore, you have the Edit feature here to type/add new emotions and the Report feature to get the visual representation of facial emotions expressed by the characters.

It’s time for video analysis!

We first see the main setting of the Oscars, with Will Smith and two others smiling in the crowd. Our technology detects the emotion of his facial expression and shows three faces with happy emotions.

In this next scene, we see Chris saying “Jada, I love you, G.I Jane 2, can’t wait to see it, alright?” It is clear to our technology that there is only one face now, and through his smile, we can detect that his emotion is happiness.

Let’s take a closer look at the reactions of the audience. Everyone except Jada smiles at this joke and in this frame. Jada’s bounding box detects the emotion of disgust. This joke clearly struck a nerve, especially since the actress had already opened up publicly about her struggles with alopecia.

As we can see through his detected emotions, Chris did not even realize that the statement he made about Jada was going to hit him back. He displays the emotion of surprise and continues with his comedic dialogue as Will makes his way to the stage.

After the slap, we can see that Chris’s detected emotion is one of surprise.

Chris tries to react by continuing his speech, but Will yells at Chris to stop talking about his wife, displaying emotion of anger. We can also detect the emotions of people in the background showing the emotion of surprise.

After Will’s response, Chris tries to explain that he had simply made a joke, showing a happy emotion. Will did not want any sort of explanation for the disrespectful joke that had been made.

The outcome of this whole experience left Chris with an emotion that can be detected as sadness. A few minutes later when Will receives his award for best actor, he expresses his regret for the incident, also publicly apologizing to Chris on social media the next day.

This news went viral almost immediately, trending around the world. There were mixed reactions to this news, with some people finding it offensive while others found it funny. imentiv AI technology can help you detect the emotions of everyone on screen, guiding your own appropriate reaction.
