We have analyzed a YouTube video on website usability testing, which aligns with our user testing scenario. In this video, the user navigates a website, evaluating its layout, functionality, and overall user experience, highlighting key usability aspects.

The following section presents a detailed psychological analysis of the testing video using our Emotion AI, with interpretations from our in-house psychologist.

(For this analysis, we focus on the audio and transcript of the user's responses, as the recording does not include the user's face. Even without video input, our AI analyzes audio and transcript data, delivering meaningful emotional insights.)

Since facial emotions are not visible in this usability testing session, the primary emotional cues are drawn from the audio analysis. The emotional distribution reveals that neutrality is the most dominant state (49.31%), followed by fear (17.37%), with boredom, disgust, and happiness contributing at lower levels. 

These findings provide valuable psychological insights into the speaker’s cognitive engagement and overall experience with the website.

The participant’s speech patterns indicate cognitive strain, which is often a result of uncertainty and confusion regarding the website’s layout and terminology.

Phrases such as "I'm not really sure," "unclear," "I have no idea what those words are," and "I feel like I'd rephrase that" suggest a state of epistemic anxiety—where the user is actively seeking clarity but struggling to find it. This aligns with the detected fear level (17.37%) in the audio analysis.

From a psychological standpoint, usability issues that introduce uncertainty can lead to cognitive overload, where a user’s working memory becomes overwhelmed. The participant appears to be attempting to interpret different sections (e.g., "featured vs. popular," "featured for members"), but the ambiguity results in hesitation and frustration. This aligns with Nielsen’s Usability Heuristics (1994), particularly the principle of “Match between system and real world,” which emphasizes that a website should use familiar language and clearly distinguish different categories.

The presence of boredom (13.42%) in the audio suggests that the participant is not fully engaged with the website. Statements like "this is kind of weird," "I'm just overall not a fan," and "I'd say it's of medium trustworthiness" reflect a lack of intrinsic motivation or interest. There is no excitement or sense of discovery, indicating that the website fails to captivate the user.

From an Affective Computing and UX Psychology perspective, boredom in usability testing often signals that the website does not offer an engaging experience. According to the Self-Determination Theory (Deci & Ryan, 1985), users engage more when they experience autonomy, competence, and relatedness. In this case, unclear categorization and ambiguous labels diminish the sense of competence, leading to emotional disengagement and reduced user satisfaction.

3. Trust and Perceived Credibility

The participant provides an explicit evaluation of the website’s trustworthiness, rating it 3 out of 5. However, the user’s speech reveals mixed emotions, suggesting that their perception of trust is influenced by both positive and negative factors:

  • Positive elements: Recognizing Medium as a well-known platform increases perceived trust.
  • Negative elements: The presence of ads, unclear labels, and structural inconsistencies undermine trustworthiness.

From a dual-process perspective on trust (Fogg, 2003):

  • System 1 (Fast, Intuitive Trust): Users rely on visual cues, familiarity, and branding. For example, the participant states, "I recognize the name Medium," which fosters an initial sense of trust.
  • System 2 (Analytical Trust): Users critically evaluate inconsistencies in design, ad placement, and content clarity. 

In this case, skepticism emerges, as reflected in the comment "This ad makes me feel slightly untrustworthy." The participant’s comparison to Craigslist’s outdated design further suggests that the website’s aesthetic does not align with modern UX expectations, which can negatively impact perceived professionalism and credibility.

4. Emotional Valence and UX Implications

Despite moments of frustration, the high level of neutral emotion (49.31%) suggests that the participant maintains a composed and analytical mindset rather than reacting with strong negative emotions. This neutrality indicates that while the website may not be particularly engaging, it is not excessively frustrating either.

From a UX psychology perspective, neutral emotions can indicate low arousal—the website does not provoke enough excitement or frustration to elicit strong emotional responses. However, the detected levels of fear and boredom highlight key usability concerns:

  • Ambiguity in design leads to uncertainty and cognitive strain.
  • Lack of engagement results in emotional disengagement and reduced user satisfaction.

  • Boredom and low engagement suggest that the website lacks compelling user experiences.

  • Moderate trust perception is influenced by ad placement, layout issues, and design clarity.

From a psychological and UX standpoint, these findings suggest that clarifying labels, improving visual hierarchy, and enhancing engagement mechanisms would improve the website’s usability and emotional impact.

What Went Wrong with Microsoft Bob's User Testing?

Microsoft Bob, a software suite launched in the 90s, is an example of how user testing can go wrong when the target audience isn't properly represented. 



While the testing focused on children and non-tech-savvy users, it missed capturing the emotional responses of the broader target audience. This led to the interface being seen as childish and counter-intuitive.
