Mental Health

Mental health refers to a state of psychological, emotional, and social well-being that influences how individuals think, feel, and act. It affects how we handle stress, relate to others, and make everyday decisions. Beyond the absence of mental illness, mental health represents emotional balance, resilience, and the capacity to adapt to life’s challenges. Understanding mental health holistically enables both early detection of distress and the promotion of overall well-being across personal and professional domains.

Mental health forms the foundation of human functioning, encompassing thoughts, emotions, and behavior. It is shaped by genetics, environment, life experiences, and social conditions. Good mental health involves emotional regulation, a realistic sense of self, satisfying relationships, and the ability to cope with change or adversity. Conversely, mental ill-health may manifest through anxiety, depression, stress, burnout, or difficulty managing emotions and relationships.

From a  psychological perspective , mental health reflects the  continuum model , ranging from well-being to distress, not a binary state. It aligns with models such as  Keyes’ dual-continua framework , which highlights that the absence of illness does not automatically imply flourishing. Cognitive-behavioral theories emphasize the importance of identifying maladaptive thought patterns, while humanistic perspectives focus on self-actualization, growth, and purpose.

In modern contexts, mental health is not confined to therapy or clinical intervention, it extends to workplaces, schools, and digital environments. Promoting mental health involves preventive approaches, such as mindfulness, emotional literacy, social support, and access to care.
